Mumbai, May 26: It will address the gaps left by conventional courses, hone skills for job market

A survey among college students, professors and employers in the job market would reveal a decreasing interest for conventional degree courses.

Updated every three to five years, the courses, most complain, are more textbook-oriented, putting little or no emphasis on practical components and in-depth research in the subjects chosen. An increasing number of colleges in the city are therefore, introducing honours programmes to help students ‘get an edge over the rest’.

Students from 55 countries to participate in 19th International Biology Olympiad

Mumbai, May 13: Mumbai is all set to host the 19th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2008 from July 13 to 20. The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) will organise the prestigious event with the support of the Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Human Resource Development on the premises of the HBCSE campus in Mankhurd. As many as 200 students form 55 countries will participate to vie for gold, silver and bronze medals besides some other awards.

When civic schools reopen, girl students can opt for self-defence training on weekends

Mumbai, May 11: When the new academic year begins next month, girls studying in civic schools can look forward to fun weekends of fitness and self-defence classes.

For, female students of all the 1,000-odd Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation schools between Classes V and VII will be given training in karate and judo, with an aim to add a new facet to the personality of these girls, who mainly belong to the middle and lower classes and slum areas.

More than two lakh students to appear for CET

Mumbai, May 4: As many as 2,06,648 candidates will appear for the Common Entrance Exam for Health Science, Pharmacy and Engineering degree on May 8 in Maharashtra. In Mumbai, 31,456 candidates will appear for the exam in 71 centres. According to preferences of courses, the students will appear for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics papers and will vie for 3,785 seats available in 58 colleges for the

Health Science course, 56,881 seats in 174 colleges for Engineering and 6,935 seats in 118 colleges for Pharmacy in the State.

HC restores permission for Balmohan’s English secondary school

Mumbai, February 21: The Bombay High Court on Thursday restored the permission granted by education department to the English medium secondary school of the reputed Balmohan Vidyalay here.

The permission had been revoked, pursuant to a judgement of Nagpur bench of High Court, in July 2006.

However Associate Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni told the High Court that since the apex court has reversed Nagpur bench’s judgement, government’s decision to revoke permission is no longer tenable.

30 members of HR College to visit Singapore

Mumbai, February 14: A 30-member contingent from H R College in South Mumbai, comprising teachers and non-teaching staff, left for Singapore on Thursday as part of a faculty enrichment programme. Though colleges sending their teachers abroad for faculty development is quite common, this would be the first time that a city college has organised a foreign trip for faculty development on such a large scale.
